The Department of Aging and Disabilities will present a free six-week workshop series from 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Thursdays, April 14 through May 19, at the Pascal Senior Activity Center, 125 Dorsey Road in Glen Burnie. "Living Healthy with Chronic Conditions" is a self-management program for adults to help them to handle their chronic conditions. These conditions include diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, obesity, chronic pain, anxiety and heart disease.
Presenters will share techniques to deal with frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation. Learn about appropriate exercise and medications, communication with family and health professionals, nutrition and evaluation of new treatments. The trip committee at the Annapolis Senior Activity Center is accepting reservations for a trip to Ladew Topiary Garden in Monkton on June 2. The trip will include a tour of a rose garden, cottage garden, water garden and the Ladew House, which is filled with English antiques, paintings, photographs and hunting memorabilia. After the tour, participants will eat a family-style luncheon at Friendly Farm Restaurant and browse the restaurant's country shop, which offers gifts, scents, sweets and baked goods. Cost is $75. The Arnold Senior Center's spring classes began Monday, April 4. Registration ends after classes meet for two weeks. There is a $40 fee for all students. Volunteer grandparents sought The Foster Grandparents Program of the county Department of Aging and Disabilities seeks volunteer grandparents to help mentor children with special needs. Volunteers serve 15 to 40 hours a week, providing mentoring, tutoring, advice and attention, teaching life skills to children in special education classes, staffing a homeless shelter, a family support center and other agencies. Activities may include reading stories, listening, helping children feed themselves, setting the table, working with puzzles, and helping children learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, vacation, sick leave, free transportation, lunch and a physical exam.
