Hanover gas clerk fatally shot

A gas station clerk was fatally shot in an early morning robbery in Hanover on Thursday, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Spokesman Lt. T.J. Smith said that officials received a 911 call at about 1:35 a.m. from a customer at an Exxon gas station at 7898 Ridge Road. Smith said the caller reported that the clerk, Rajinder Kumar, 49 of Glen Burnie, was injured and unconscious. Police, fire and EMS officials responded to the scene and found the man had died from apparent gunshot wounds, Smith said.

Police obtained a video at the scene that showed a male suspect entering the gas station shortly after 1 a.m., shooting the clerk and taking cash from behind the counter before fleeing the scene on foot, Smith said.

The suspect, Smith said, is an African-American male of unknown age with an average build, wearing a dark hooded sweat shirt, tan or light colored shorts and armed with a handgun.

Police also are looking for a blue Jeep that was at the gas station at about 1 a.m. because the occupants may have witnessed the homicide.

The Jeep may have been a Patriot or Cherokee, possibly with New Jersey license plates, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call AAPD Homicide Detective Jack Hartzell at 410-222-3460; or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP, Smith said.
