Police identify Annapolis man killed in Riviera Beach crash

Police have identified the man who died Saturday after being struck by a car in Riviera Beach.

Anne Arundel County police said Michael Ireland, 43, of Annapolis, died after he was struck by a vehicle while walking on Fort Smallwood Road.

Ireland was struck in the early-morning hours Saturday, as firefighters responded to a report of a pedestrian struck about 2 a.m. in the area of Homeland Road.

Firefighters found Ireland after he had been struck by a two-door 2007 Volkswagen sedan driven by Devon Stoddard Menza, 18, of Pasadena. Ireland was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe Ireland was walking into oncoming traffic on Fort Smallwood Road. No charges have been filed.

“The preliminary cause of the crash is the pedestrian failing to yield to roadway traffic and walk on the available shoulder,” a police spokesman said.
