Three children were flown to Children’s Hospital in Washington on Friday afternoon following a two-car collision on Route 4 South in Lothian, Anne Arundel County fire officials said.

The call came at 4:46 p.m. for the accident on Route 4 at Lower Pindell Road.

Firefighters arrived to find three children trapped in the wreckage. All three were pulled to safety and flown to the hospital by Maryland State Police and U.S. Park Police helicopters.

A fire department spokesman said the injured were a 14-year-old girl, an 8-year-old boy and a 4-year-old boy. The 8-year-old suffered life-threatening injuries, fire officials said.

The adult drivers of both vehicles involved refused medical service.

Route 4 was closed in both directions as helicopters collected the patients. Route 4 south of Lower Pindell Road remained closed during rush hour until around 6:30 p.m. when police said one lane was getting through as the investigation continued.
