County opens new volunteer fire station in Lake Shore

A new volunteer fire station opened in Lake Shore in northern Anne Arundel County on Tuesday as a part of an ongoing effort to enhance public safety facilities.

Located at 4642 Mountain Road, the 13,000-square-foot station cost $6 million and was paid through 30-year bonds. County Executive Steve Schuh and fire Chief Allan Graves attended the opening event.

There was a ceremonial groundbreaking in 2014, but the project stalled. Schuh re-broke ground on the project again in 2016, ultimately leading to the fire station that just opened.

At one point the county budgeted $5.5 million for the project and expected it to be completed by February 2018. A county spokesman was not immediately available to say why the project took more time and money to build than previously estimated.

Firefighters began 24/7 staffing at the station on Sunday, according to the volunteer company's website.
