A new Crofton area high school has about another year of construction, but school officials have already named its principal.

Southern High School Principal Kathryn Feuerherd will spend the next year assembling the school’s staff and working with community members to form the school’s culture. She’ll also grant the school its official name and choose its colors and mascot.

The Crofton school is scheduled to open in September 2020. Its construction marks Anne Arundel County’s first time building a new high school in more than 30 years.

“I am beyond excited at the unique opportunities that come with opening a brand new high school,” Feuerherd said in a statement released by Anne Arundel County Public Schools. “I am very much looking forward to the process of working collaboratively to create a new school community of which we can all be very, very proud.”

Schools Superintendent George Arlotto selected Feuerherd for the position Wednesday. She’s served multiple roles in the school district since 2003, including social studies teacher and assistant principal at Old Mill High School.

She became principal of Southern High in Harwood prior to the 2016-2017 school year, according to a statement issued by the school system.

Feuerherd will assume her new role on July 1.
