Police say an Annapolis man died Friday after he crashed his vehicle into a tractor-trailer on West Street the day before.

Annapolis police said officers were called to the scene of an accident near 1797 West St. at 9:09 a.m. Thursday.

A tractor-trailer driven by Derwin Courtney, 60, of Virginia, was backing up into a business on West Street as traffic was stopped in both directions, police said.

As the truck was backing up, police said a Hyundai Elantra driven by Ralph Reeder, 89, of Annapolis, drove into the westbound lanes while traveling eastbound, crashing into the cab of the tractor-trailer.

Reeder was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where police said he died Friday of injuries he suffered in the crash.

Courtney was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries.

Police are still investing the crash and ask anyone with information to contact Officer Travis McQueen at 410-268-9000 or tlmcqueen@annapolis.gov.
