Monday's downpours send nearly 40,000 gallons of rainwater and sewage into Jones Falls

More than 38,000 gallons of sewage and rainwater overflowed into the Jones Falls after Monday night's downpours, the Department of Public Works said Wednesday.

The rainwater and sewage came from an overflow at North Charles and West Lanvale streets near The Charles theater. The overflows were designed more than 100 years ago as part of Baltimore's outdated sewer system. They're being eliminated, public works said, as part of a billion-dollar rehabilitation.
