Sewage overflow pours 23,000 gallons of wastewater into Baltimore stream

A sewer overflow that leaked 23,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into an East Baltimore stream — at a rate of 100 gallons per minute — was stopped by Department of Public Works crews Wednesday night.

Officials said Thursday the overflow was caused by a 24-inch broken pipe. The sewage was flowing into Armistead Run, a tributary of Herring Run near Federal Street, the department said in a news release.

"Warning signs have been posted at the stream, and cleanup operations will continue until the overflow is contained," the release said.

Public Works said it notified the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Baltimore City Health Department.
