Homicides in Fells Point, Northwest Baltimore latest in violent start to October

Baltimore homicide detectives were investigating a double homicide in Northwest Baltimore and a woman's murder in a Fells Point — marking seven homicides in the first six days of October.

Police also were investigating two other nonfatal shootings, in North and Southwest Baltimore.

The double homicide occurred in the 5200 block of Denmore Ave., near Pimlico Race Course, at about 1:27 a.m. Tuesday. Police were called for a report of "suspicious activity" at a home and found the door to the residence open. Inside, a man and a woman were found shot to death. Police did not release their identities or ages.

A neighbor who declined to provide her name out of fear said the couple was married and that they lived with a 5-year-old son who the father walked every day to kindergarten.

The woman who was killed in Fells Point was found in her apartment at about 10:20 p.m. Monday, in the 700 block of S. Bond St. A co-worker called police after having not heard from her for several days. Officers made entry and found the woman, 40, dead in her hallway, suffering from multiple stab wounds to her chest and arms, police said.

Her identity was not released. The killing occurred in a rowhouse apartment building, two blocks from the waterfront and on a cobblestone street. On Tuesday afternoon, one of the entrances had no door, and an apartment door had crime scene taped pulled across it.

There have been seven homicides in Baltimore in the first six days of October. Three of the last four victims have been women, following the fatal shooting of Jaleesa Brooks, 24, in the 5000 block of Raintree Way on Sunday afternoon.

For the year, homicides remain down compared with the same time last year, and nonfatal shootings were down by an even wider margin. City police have reported 170 homicides so far in 2014.

Anyone with information was asked to call homicide detectives at 410-396-2100.

In addition to the homicides, detectives were investigating two other nonfatal shootings. A man was shot in both his legs in the 4400 block of The Alameda just after midnight Tuesday. He was expected to survive.

At 11:30 p.m. on Monday, police responding to a report of gunshots in the area of Potter Street and Yale Avenue in Irvington found a man who had been shot. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed but police said district detectives were investigating the case.

An earlier version of this article misstated the block where the Fells Point killing occurred. It was on South Bond Street.
