First slaying in Baltimore in Northwest

The year's first killing in Baltimore occurred Tuesday night in the Arlington community, north of Lake Ashburton. Police said a 62-year-old man was shot in the 4000 block of Edgewood Road about 9:45 p.m. and died at Sinai Hospital.

UPDATE: Police have identified the victim as Bruce Royster, whose last known address was in the 2900 block of Baker St. in West Baltimore

Another man was shot in the back and wounded about an hour later in the 2300 block of Orem Ave., also in Northwest Baltimore in the Parkview-Woodbrook community just south of the Rawlings Conservatory in Druid Hill Park. Earlier this week, a 13-year-old was shot and critically wounded in Northeast Baltimore.

Killing in the city dropped last year to the lowest numbers in three decades, finishing at 196, the first time since 1978. Read reporter Justin Fenton's story on the historic murder count, and another that further dissects the numbers.

Tuesday night's killing, while the first of 2012, is also the first since Dec. 28, when a man was shot inside his house in Northwest Baltimore. Chart out Baltimore's homicides here.
