Police investigate two shootings, one fatal, in city over night

Detectives are investigating two cross-town shootings, one of them fatal, that took place early Saturday morning in Baltimore.

Police say Rodney Mandotis Johnson, 30, was shot multiple times in the 800 block of N. Bond Street, in East Baltimore, just before 1:30 a.m. Johnson died at nearby Johns Hopkins Hospital about 50 minutes after police found him.

A description of the gunman has not been released.

At about 3:00 a.m., in the 2200 block of Liberty Heights Ave., near the Mondawmin shopping center in Northwest Baltimore, police found another man who had been shot in the chest and leg. He was taken to a nearby hospital but police did not give his condition Saturday afternoon.

After the shooting, at least one person took the man's car, said Detective Jeremy Silbert, a city police spokesman.

An officer spotted a car fitting the description of the victim's stolen vehicle about 3:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of W. Belvedere Ave., Silbert said.

The officer made a U-turn, but the vehicle sped away, he said. A few minutes later, police received a report of a crash near the intersection of Belle and Ferndale avenues involving the same car.

The car had hit a van and a parked vehicle, the detective said. The driver of the van was thrown from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Police have taken a man into custody and he is considered a person of interest, Silbert said, but no formal charges have been made filed.

Anyone with information about the shootings is urged to call city detectives at 410-396-2466.
