Markell was a sophomore at the charter school, said Anne Fullerton, a city schools spokeswoman.

Police had no last-known address for the teenager, and family members could not be reached at two recent addresses listed for them. School Principal James Gresham declined a request for an interview.

In what detectives believe was a related incident, a 32-year-old man arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh about 10 minutes after Markell’s shooting was reported, police said. He said he’d been shot near the corner of North Gilmor and West Fayette streets nearby.

Police ask anyone with information to contact detectives at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

Editor’s note: Before releasing Markell’s identity, police initially misreported his age. Markell was 16.
