Security guard critically injured in shooting near College Park

A security guard was critically injured in a shooting overnight at a conference center near the University of Maryland, College Park during an apparent armed robbery, university police said Tuesday.

The male guard was shot by two men with handguns at the University of Maryland, University College's Inn and Conference Center near the intersections of University Boulevard, Campus Drive and Adelphi Road, police said in a campus alert at nearly 3 a.m. Tuesday.

One suspect was arrested. Police did not identify the victim or suspect.

The university police department had warned people to avoid the area, but after a search for the second suspect was unsuccessful, they issued an all-clear.

Three safes were taken and later recovered near the facility, along with a handgun, police said.

"We believe this was a targeted crime of opportunity," Chief David B. Mitchell said in a statement.

The college offers online courses and enrolls about 80,000 students around the world, including active duty military personnel, according to its website. Its headquarters and conference center in the Washington, D.C., suburbs are next to the University of Maryland, College Park campus.
