Barnes was a sophomore at Adelphi University and played on the men’s basketball team, according to the team’s website. He played in 11 games off the bench during the 2017-2018 season.

He also played basketball at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, which mourned his loss on Twitter, writing “RIP Doc.”

His former Mount Saint Joseph coach, Pat Clatchey, said everyone knew Barnes as “Doc” and that the undersized power forward had “a very contagious personality.”

He had the ability to get along with people from all walks of life.

“He had the ability to get along with people from all walks of life,” Clatchey said. “I think his basketball experience kind of helped him do that.”

He added that he knew Barnes as an athletic and competitive power forward who played “with effort and energy, rebounding even though he was undersized.”

“[He was] just a good person and when anybody this young passes away, it’s a tragedy,” Clatchey said.
