City jury convicts in killing of man, shooting of his son

A Baltimore jury convicted a 39-year-old man for killing a man and wounding his 11-year-old son during a botched burglary in West Baltimore, prosecutors said.

Joseph Oglesby was accused of fatally shooting Ralph Timmons after Oglesby and another man, John Knox, broke in to Timmons' home in search of drugs and money in April 2013. Timmons' son came downstairs during the shooting, and Oglesby turned the gun on him.

Knox, 21, pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder and testified against Oglesby. The boy also took the stand to describe the incident.

Months after his death, Timmons would be posthumously indicted as part of the Black Guerrilla Family jail conspiracy case. Timmons was the half brother of gang leader Tavon White, who pleaded guilty for his role at the top of the racketeering conspiracy that smuggled drugs and cellphones into the City Detention Center. Authorities have said Timmons helped run the gang's operations from the outside.

But evidence at the trial showed no link to the gang. Instead, Knox, a drug addict, said Oglesby approached him with a simple burglary plan.

Timmons' son was able to flee the home and flag down police, who arrived with Knox and Oglesby still inside the home.

Oglesby's defense attorneys said that he was friends with Timmons and was in the house because he had met Timmons at a pizza shop and returned to the home with him. He said he fled into the basement, where he was found by police hiding inside of a fold-up couch, because he was scared.
