A 21-year-old man from Sparrows Point is charged with manslaughter after police said he fatally beat a man during a fight last week in Ocean City.
Darren Beattie turned himself in Tuesday afternoon, police said. He is being held in Ocean City awaiting a court appearance.
"This type of senseless, preventable and tragic situation should serve as a reminder to everyone who finds public fights anywhere in Worcester County acceptable — they're not. Not only are they unacceptable, but people can lose their lives and others can lose their freedom," Beau Oglesby, the state's attorney for Worcester County, said in a statement.
Beattie was identified as a suspect after a weeklong investigation by Ocean City police.
Police said Beattie fatally beat Ryan Shupert, 31, of Lutherville Timonium, over Memorial Day weekend.
On May 29, Shupert and his friend were involved in an early morning fight with four other men at 136th Street and Coastal Highway, police said.
Shupert was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and died two days later.
Online court records did not list an attorney for Beattie.
