One of the earliest images of Baltimore on fire during the rioting that broke out late last month involved a Maryland Transit Administration police cruiser and van burning on the corner of Pennsylvania and North avenues.
One month later, MTA Police have issued a plea for help from the public in identifying seven people they believe were involved in the alleged arson.
The fire preceded many more fires that broke out across the city on the night of April 27 and early on the morning of April 28, following more peaceful protests over the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray.
Gray was arrested by Baltimore Police on April 12, sustained a severe spinal cord injury while in police custody, and died April 19.
On April 27, a clash between rock-throwing youths and police in riot gear near Mondawmin Mall quickly escalated into rioting, with the intersection of Pennsylvania and North avenues at its center.
Six Baltimore Police officers have since been charged in relation to Gray's death. Officials have estimated the cost of the rioting to the city at $20 million.
The MTA is a state agency. The state has not estimated its costs.
MTA Police are asking anyone with information on the identities of the seven people call police at 410-454-7720.
Paul Shepard, a MTA spokesman, declined to say where police obtained the images released Wednesday of the people the police are looking for.
