Jurors convict man in retaliatory shooting; girlfriend pleads guilty for her role

A 28-year-old Baltimore man was convicted by a jury for a revenge shooting that prosecutors said stemmed from an altercation in Fells Point, prosecutors announced, while court records show he was acquitted in a second incident.

Prosecutors said Carlos Wheeler was a member of an eastside drug crew called the "Gucci Boys," and got into a fight at the Captain James seafood restaurant on May 27, 2013 that sparked two retaliatory shootings.

In one case, witnesses said a gold sedan sped off after 12 to 15 shots were fired at a man attending a cookout in the 1600 block of W. Fayette St. Wheeler was convicted of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault in relation to that incident.

But Wheeler was acquitted on counts related to the second shooting, which occurred in the 1600 block of E. 33rd St., near Lake Montebello.

Prosecutors praised Det. Anthony Forbes for his work on the case.

His then-girlfriend, 21-year-old Dacora Ross, earlier pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Prosecutors said she drove Wheeler to each shooting.

Ross' attorney had denounced prosecutors when they originally charged Ross with conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of attempted murder, saying they were intimidating her to make her testify against Wheeler. A warrant for her arrest was signed the day she failed to show up for a meeting with prosecutors.

Ross fled police when they tried to arrest her, taking off on a high-speed pursuit that exceeded 80 mph through residential areas of Baltimore. She was on the run for six days.

She will be sentenced in July.
