Firefighters extinguish blaze in home, find dead person inside

Firefighters who extinguished a fire in house in the Coppin Heights neighborhood Friday afternoon found a dead person inside, Baltimore Fire Department Capt. Roman Clark said.

Heavy smoke was coming out from the rear of the two-story house 1717 Ashburton Street when firefighters arrived around 4:30 p.m., Clark said. After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters searched the house and found a body but were unable to determine the age or gender of the person, he said.

The house may not have been occupied at the time, and BGE told the department that there was no electric service at that address, Clark said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said, and the medical examiner will determine the cause of the victim's death.
