The University of Maryland Police Department announced Saturday that a student has been arrested in a reported hate bias incident at the College Park campus.
The police department said that on Dec. 10 at about 8:18 p.m., a student was sent anti-Semitic messages on her cellphone.
A detective determined that a university student sent the messages and on Feb. 24 received an arrest warrant for Muqarrab Ahmed Abdullah, who was arrested Feb. 27 by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. Police say Abdullah was not known to the student who received the messages.
Abdullah, 24, of La Plata is charged with electronic communication harassment, telephone misuse for repeated calls, and race/religion crime: person/group, police said.
No attorney is listed for Abdullah in online court records. No dates are scheduled in his case, the records show.
