Baltimore County police officers shot a man Monday who was wanted in connection with a double stabbing, but the department released few details.
The shooting occurred in Northeast Baltimore, and both city and county police are investigating. Police did not release the name of the man who was shot and said they did not know his condition.
County officers had an arrest warrant for the man and were "conducting surveillance" on him Monday morning, Baltimore police Capt. Eric Kowalczyk said.
The man encountered officers in the 5600 block of Frankford Ave. in Baltimore shortly before noon, Kowalczyk said. He said the suspect "had what appeared to be a handgun."
At that point, Kowalczyk said, officers opened fire. He declined to say what caused them to shoot. He said a weapon was found at the scene.
Kowalczyk said the man was taken to an area hospital.
Three county officers were involved in the shooting, county police Cpl. John Wachter said. He would not say how many fired their weapons. None of the officers was injured. Police did not immediately release their names.
Police blocked part of the roadway to the Frankford Gardens apartments Monday afternoon with yellow tape. A group of onlookers gathered across the street.
Two men who said they knew the man who was shot said he had told family members he planned to turn himself in. They said he had visited the apartments to say goodbye to relatives.
Luis Leon, 32, said the man shot by police was his younger cousin. He said he didn't believe his cousin was armed.
"He was going to turn himself in," Leon said. "He literally was coming here to visit his sister, say goodbye."
Leon said his family had received no information about his cousin's condition or what led to the shooting.
"No one knows anything," he said.
The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, Wachter said.
Wachter would not say whether the man was wanted in connection with the area's most recent double stabbing, which occurred over the weekend at the Prime Nightclub on Pulaski Highway in White Marsh.
