Baltimore County police investigate death of man, 84, assaulted by fellow nursing-home patient

Baltimore County homicide detectives are investigating after a patient at a Catonsville nursing home died following an alleged assault by another patient.

Police say they went to the Forest Haven Nursing Home in the 700 block of Edmondson Avenue on the evening of Jan. 26 for a report of an assault. They say they learned that 61-year-old male patient pushed Henri Balmadier, an 84-year-old patient.

Balmadier fell and hit his head, police said. He was taken to the Saint Agnes Hospital and later to Gilchrist Hospice in Columbia, where he died Monday.

An autopsy found that Balmadier died of complications from head trauma, and the manner of death was ruled homicide.

Detectives are still investigating and will turn over their findings to the Baltimore County State's Attorney's Office, which will decide whether to file any charges, the police department said.

The other man's name was not released because he has not been charged.

He was discharged to a hospital after the altercation and has not been accepted back into the nursing home, according to a statement from Mid-Atlantic Health Care, the owner and operator of the Catonsville facility.

The company said they are cooperating with the investigation and reported the incident as required by state and federal regulations.

"Our heart goes out to the family of the victim," the company said in a statement. "We trust that the police and other government officials will decide how to handle the perpetrator of the aggression.
