A police report says a black student blamed his "bottled up anger" for racist, threatening graffiti he admitted to scrawling in bathrooms at Goucher College.
Baltimore County police on Monday filed hate crime charges against 21-year-old Fynn Arthur, a Brunswick, Maine, resident who was enrolled as a student at the school in Towson.
Police arrested Arthur on Thursday on charges of malicious destruction of property. Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger says his office recommended the four additional charges after discussing the evidence with investigators — a move that he said is not unusual in cases in which intent must be proved.
“Once we looked at the graffiti, it was easy to look and see the motivation,” Shellenberger said. “He told us what his motivation was.”
The police report says Arthur told investigators he was responsible for the Nov. 14 and Nov. 30 bathroom graffiti of a backward swastika and a death threat that included dorm room numbers of black students, including himself.
The college says Arthur has been banned from campus. Shellenberger says he doesn’t know whether Arthur has an attorney. No attorney was listed in court records as representing Arthur.
