A man was shot in Charles North mid-morning Saturday, Baltimore police said.

The incident happened in an up-and-coming neighborhood near popular book store and eatery Red Emma's and the Joe Squared pizza shop.

Employees at Red Emma's, where customers crowded the tables a few hours after the incident, declined to discuss the shooting.

Wren Taube, a server at Joe Squared, said he was preparing the restaurant for opening when he heard three or four gunshots. He looked out the door and people were running down the street.

"Just as fast as they were running, they stopped and everything was back to normal again," Taube said.

His co-worker, David Smith, said he wasn't totally surprised by the shooting because people congregate on corners in the area.

"Something was bound to happen," he said. "It is unfortunate."

Jia Aziz, who works in the nearby Mini Mart ringing up customers from behind a bulletproof glass, said customers were talking about the shooting all morning, but she didn't hear the shots.

"There's so much violence," she said. "People are scared to come out."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Citywide Shooting detectives, 410-396-2221, or the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line, 1-866-7LOCKUP.
