A 25-year-old man was found shot in the leg Thursday near Gilmor Homes in West Baltimore, where Freddie Gray was arrested.
Officers were called at 4:01 p.m. Thursday to the 1600 block of Gilmor Ave., where they found the victim with a bullet wound, police said.
Baltimore police Deputy Commissioner Dean Palmere said a family member of the victim told police that a cab or sedan service had picked him up, possibly in the area of Eberle Drive and Patterson Avenue in Reisterstown Station, about 5 miles northwest.
When the victim arrived in the West Baltimore block, he complained of a leg injury that was later determined to be a gunshot wound, Palmere said.
He was taken to a hospital, where he is being treated.
Crime tape blocked off half a block on the rowhome-lined Gilmor Street as detectives investigated Thursday afternoon.
The crime scene was a few blocks from where Gray was arrested on April 12. Gray's death a week later from injuries prosecutors say he sustained while in police transport launched Baltimore into days of civil unrest.
Since the April riots, violence has surged dramatically in the city and West Baltimore. Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts has said officers in the Western District are finding it difficult to do routine police work because they're surrounded by angry residents taking video. Some patrol officers are riding two in a car for safety, Batts said this week.
Thursday afternoon, few people lingered outside the crime scene. Officers and residents in the block exchanged information on stoops.
Palmere said there are still instances of officers being surrounded but "as we move forward, we hope things will subside."

The shooting was the first on Thursday — marking an unusually quiet day without frequent violence when compared to past days. In May, 42 people were killed in the city, the most in a month in decades.
