A man was fatally shot in West Baltimore on Thursday night, just blocks from the Western District police station.

Officers responded to the 1100 block of McKean Ave. in the city's Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood for reports of a shooting and found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 11:35 p.m., police said. His identity was not released pending notification of his next of kin.

At the scene late Thursday, evidence markers dotted the middle of the street. At least two men were led out of a nearby home in handcuffs — one of the men had bags over his hands to preserve gunshot residue.

Police did not explain why the men were being taken into custody or whether anyone had been charged in the shooting.

The killing is the sixth of the week as Baltimore surpassed 200 homicides for the second straight year. On Wednesday, 21-year-old Tyree Taylor was killed in the 800 block of Appleton St., just a few blocks south of where Thursday night's killing occurred. A vacant storefront next to a liquor store on Edmondson Avenue was tagged with graffiti that read "RIP Tyree."
