An armed man was running from police late Tuesday night when he turned and fired several shots at officers, police said. They returned fire, police said, and shot him multiple times near Clifton Park in Northeast Baltimore.
"The initial shots were fired at the officers," said Baltimore Police Col. Stanley Brandford, chief of the criminal investigations division.
The man was hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday night. No officers were injured.
The shooting happened in the 1700 block of Homestead St., police said.
As the ambulance pulled away, a tense scene unfolded at the intersection of Harford Road and Homestead Street, the Coldstream-Homestead-Montebello neighborhood.
Several men on the sidewalk filmed the confrontation with their cellphones as the crowd gathered.
Someone called 911 about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday to report gunfire in the 2600 block of Aisquith St., police said. Officers arrived and spotted a gunman. The officers left their car to chase the man. It was not immediately known how far they chased him before the shooting started.
