Baltimore homicides reach 340 with Monday morning shooting

A man was shot and killed in East Baltimore early Monday as homicides continue to mount in the city's deadliest year per capita.

The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was found with a gunshot wound to his head around 1:20 a.m. in the 1000 block of Greenmount Avenue, in Johnston Square. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The killing is the 340th homicide in Baltimore this year. The most people killed in a year was in 1993, when there were 353 killings but also about 100,000 more residents. Baltimore reached its highest per capita homicide rate in November.

Police did not release further details on the fatal shooting and asked anyone with information to call homicide detectives at 410-396-2100 or Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.
