A 25-year-old man was charged Thursday with killing a man in a home in Irvington, near Mount St. Joseph High School, on Tuesday night, police said.

Joseph Tyree Ryles faces murder, involuntary manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and other charges in the death of 24-year-old Owen Crayton in the basement of a home in the 300 block of Marydell Road, where Ryles lived, police said.

Crayton was found at the bottom of the steps and pronounced dead at 7:10 p.m., less than an hour after officers arrived, police said.

Witnesses, and Ryles himself, told police the two were in the basement together when the shot was fired, according to charging documents. The gun was not found; Ryles told police that Crayton said, "Go hide the gun," after he was shot, according to charging documents.

A witness also told officers Ryles said to his girlfriend, "If they take me to jail, don't leave me."

Investigators also found no evidence Crayton had tried to shoot himself. His injury was "inconsistent with the vast majority of self-inflicted gunshot wounds," police said.

Ryles, who was legally barred from having a gun due to a July 2009 drug arrest, is being held at the Baltimore City Detention Center, police said.

No lawyer for him was listed in online court records, and a phone number listed for his home was disconnected.
