A 54-year-old fugitive from North Carolina fatally shot himself Tuesday after being tracked to a home in North Baltimore by a state police task force, police said.
The man, who was not immediately identified, had allegedly held up a Greensboro, N.C., phone store on April 21, rammed several police vehicles during a pursuit and then stole a SUV after a home invasion, said Greg Shipley, a spokesman for the Maryland State Police.
Police tracked the vehicle to an address in the 6000 block of Loch Raven Boulevard in the Ramblewood neighborhood, and at about 10 a.m. surrounded the home and told the man to surrender, Shipley said.
The man emerged from rear of the home, holding a handgun.
"Without warning, he lifted the handgun and shot himself in the head," Shipley said.
He was pronounced dead at Johns Hopkins Hospital around noon, police said.
There was no one else in the home, and no officers fired their weapons or were injured. Police were investigating why the man had gone to that home, while the shooting was being investigated by the Baltimore Police Department Special Investigation Response Team and homicide.
The Maryland State Apprehension Team involved in the attempted arrest includes members from the U.S. Marshals Service, state and city police, and officers from Baltimore and Howard counties, Shipley said.
