Former Baltimore landfill employee sentenced in scrap metal theft scheme

A former Baltimore landfill employee was sentenced in federal court Thursday for his role in a scrap metal selling scheme, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

U.S. District Judge Marvin J. Garbis sentenced Jarrod Terrell Hazelton, 33, of Parkville to two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for conspiracy and wire fraud for his role in a scheme to illegally sell scrap metal from the Quarantine Road landfill and the Northwest Transfer Station. Hazelton was also ordered to pay restitution of $400,000.

Authorities said between 2005 until last year, Hazelton and other city public works employees collected and sold scrap metal for personal profit during work, costing the city at least $400,000 in revenue.

Hazelton led the scheme, authorities said, coordinating the daily collection of scrap metal.

Three other former city employees and five commercial trash haulers have previously pleaded guilty in the scheme, with five receiving prison time.
