Man leaps from Jones Falls Expressway after crash

Police shut down part of the southbound Jones Fall Expressway Friday night to rescue two people trapped in vehicles and treat a third who leapt from the elevated roadway, Baltimore City officials said.

Three people were taken to area hospitals after the two-vehicle, head-on collision near Pleasant Street, officials said. After the accident, a man left one of the cars and jumped off the expressway near Gay Street in what police said was an attempt to flee the scene.

Police Department spokesman Det. Jeremy Silbert said none of the people involved in the incident had life-threatening injuries, though fire officials said the man who jumped was in dire condition. The circumstances surrounding the crash and conditions of the patients were not immediately available.

The Baltimore Department of Transportation said on Twitter that traffic problems were "severe" at 6 p.m., and to avoid the area.
