The victim, a 34-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital with gunshot wounds to the leg, Jackson said. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. Neither the officer nor Barney were injured. The officer has not yet been identified.

Citywide shooting detectives are investigating the shooting, Jackson said. Police do not release the identities of nonfatal shooting victims.

The officer had been on patrol and got out of his car to chase Barney, a schools spokeswoman said Wednesday. The suspect and the officer exchanged fire, spokeswoman Karen Parks said.

No attorney was listed for Barney in court records. He is being held without bail at Central Booking Intake Facility.
