Person of interest in Lor Scoota killing is fatally shot in West Baltimore

Suspect in Lor Scoota killing is shot dead in West Baltimore

A man who was shot to death Monday afternoon in West Baltimore was considered a person of interest in the killing of popular local rapper Lor Scoota, police said Tuesday.

Cortez Mitchell, 22, was behind the wheel of a car traveling south on North Monroe Street on Monday around 4:45 p.m. when he was shot.

"He was a person of interest in the death of Lor Scoota," said T.J. Smith, the Police Department's chief spokesman. "He was one of several people who were a person of interest."

Scoota — real name: Tyriece Watson — was shot to death on June 25 as he was leaving a peace rally in Northeast Baltimore.

Police say Watson was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Moravia and Harford roads. They say a gunman got out of a minivan, approached Watson's car and opened fire. Watson's vehicle continued on and crashed into a building.

Police have said Watson's killing was retaliation for another shooting. They say the rapper was targeted because he was associated with someone who had shot someone else.

In August, police told The Baltimore Sun that they had recovered the gun used to kill Scoota, confirmed through ballistics tests.

No arrests have been made.

"We believe that there are at least two people still on the street and one in jail related to the Lor Scoota murder investigation," Smith said.

Mitchell appeared to be the victim of a similar shooting. Bullet casings and broken window glass lay on North Monroe Street near Fayette Street.

Officers found Mitchell three blocks south, suffering from gunshot wounds in a Lexus sedan that had come to rest against a tree, its driver's side window shot out.

He was taken to an area hospital, where he died.

Police released the names of two other men who were shot and killed in West Baltimore on Monday.

Morelle Booze, 29, of West Baltimore was shot Monday afternoon in Central Park Heights. Booze was shot multiple times on the 3700 block of Beehler Ave. and died at a hospital, police said.

Ricardo Josey, 19, of the 1800 block of Bentalou St. was shot and killed Monday night near his home in Coppin Heights-Ash Co-East. He was shot multiple times on the 2300 block of Presbury St., police said.
