Police chase suspect outside state's attorney debate at E. Baltimore church

A man carrying a handgun was chased and arrested by police just outside an event attended by a write-in candidate for Baltimore state's attorney Thursday evening.

Police said they recovered the weapon after a foot chase at about 6:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Wolfe St., near the Church of the New Covenant, where Russell Neverdon, a write-in candidate for state's attorney, was reportedly the only attendee at a debate.

Bmorenews.com reported that the one-man debate took place "in the middle of a crime scene," with officers on foot and the police helicopter aiding in the arrest outside. Police did not provide any details on the arrest.

Neverdon could not be reached for comment late Thursday. The Baltimore defense attorney is running as a write-in candidate against Marilyn Mosby, who upset incumbent State's Attorney Gregg Bernstein in the Democratic primary election in June.
