Body found in fire Friday had been shot multiple times

The body found inside a burned home in Baltimore's Coppin Heights neighborhood was that of an adult male who was shot multiple times, Baltimore police said Sunday.

Firefighters responded at 4:35 p.m. Friday to a the 1700 block of Ashburton Street for a fire. After encountering heavy smoke from the rear of a two-story home at 1717 Ashburton, firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. It was then that a body was found, though crews were unable to determine the age or gender of the person, according to Baltimore Fire Department Capt. Roman Clark.

Police on Sunday said the body found was that of a man who suffered multiple gunshots. Police did not identify the man.

The dwelling where the fire occurred was vacant at the time, police said.

Baltimore police homicide detectives and an arson unit responded to the scene as a precaution, police said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Homicide detectives are handling the investigation into the death, and anyone with information may call 410-396-2100.
