Two men were shot in the West Baltimore neighborhood of Poppleton Thursday night, police said.
Police responded to the 800 block of West Lexington St. around 9 p.m. There they found two men, both with gunshot wounds to the leg, police said.
Both men were taken to area hospitals, police said.
The police did not immediately release information on the victims' conditions, or say whether they have any suspects.
There was blood on a sidewalk in a courtyard of the Poe Homes apartments. A bullet had shattered the windshield of a van parked out front. Police officers studied the facades of buildings across the street for more damage.
A couple who lives down the block said they were in their apartment when they heard the shots.
"I thought it was firecrackers," the man said. "Next thing I know I heard Foxtrot," he added, referring to police helicopters.
The man and his girlfriend declined to give their names for fear of their safety.
They saw a middle-aged man lying in the Poe Homes courtyard, calling out in pain, they said.
They didn't know how many shots were fired. "It was a lot of 'em though," the woman said.
"Everybody heard the shots," said another neighbor, who also declined to give his name for fear of his safety.
He expressed frustration with the regular violence in the area.
"I'm trying to leave tomorrow," he said.
