Baltimore police say the body of a 26-year-old woman who was reported missing Tuesday was found dead in the water near the city’s Canton neighborhood Thursday.

Tara Savannah Payne was found dead in the water just off of the 1200 block of Dockside Circle in the same neighborhood, police said in a news release.

The department said recovery efforts were still ongoing and that her body will be taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death.

Payne was reported missing Tuesday and police said Wednesday that homicide detectives had taken over the investigation into her disappearance, as is routine when there are questions about a death or a missing person.

The department said Wednesday that Payne’s disappearance had been tracked back to the Boston Street corridor in Canton and that she may have fallen into the water near that area.

Payne had been a server at McGarvey’s Saloon & Oyster Bar at Market Space in Annapolis since about 2017; her last shift was about two weeks ago, said General Manager Alison McClure-Thomas.

McGarvey’s employees have taken Payne’s death hard, McClure-Thomas said. On Wednesday, the restaurant will be closed for the day to hold a celebration of life with Payne’s family.
