Baltimore police say a man who claimed to have been set on fire during a robbery was actually set on fire during “illegal drug activity.”
Police learned about the man who was set on fire on Jan. 2, when they were called to the city’s McElderry Park neighborhood for a report of a robbery around 6:30 p.m.
A 59-year-old told investigators that one or two people had thrown liquid on him and set him on fire before robbing him of his headphones and wallet.
He made further comments to a local television station to that effect, saying he was walking to the bus stop on McElderry near North Glover Street when the attack occurred. Police say he suffered burns on less than 3% of his body, mostly on the back of his head.
Now, police say that the man has confessed that he was not set on fire during a robbery and detectives now believe he was set on fire while the man “was involved with illegal drug activity with a woman who then intentionally set him on fire.”
Police say they’re now searching for a female suspect who’s believed to have set him on fire.
Anyone who has any information about the woman who’s believed to intentionally set the man on fire is asked to call 410-396-2422 or leave tips anonymously at 1-866-7Lockup.
