Baltimore police used a stun gun to bring down a 35-year-old man who officers said had a gun and crashed his car while running away from a traffic stop, officials said.
Police stopped a black sedan around noon near Parkside Drive and Belair Road for flagged vehicle tags and a missing license plate, according to police spokesman Donny Moses.
When officers checked the man’s identification, they found an open arrest warrant for aggravated assault, Moses said.
When the two officers asked the driver to step out of the vehicle, he refused and a struggle ensued. During the struggle, officers noticed a gun between the man’s legs, Moses said.
The driver pushed the officers away and took off southbound on Belair Road at a high rate of speed, striking two other cars.
The man’s car came to a rest at the curb a couple of blocks south, and, despite apparent injuries, he ran down the 2800 block of Pelham Ave. Officers chased the man and used a stun gun to subdue him, according to police.
Charly Johnson was in her office at Belair-Edison Neighborhood Inc. across the street from the 2800 block of Pelham Ave. during the incident with police, she said.
Johnson heard a loud boom just before she saw the man police were chasing, she said.
“I see this guy jogging down the street,” she said. “I didn’t know it was him until I saw police running after him.”
Officers later found the handgun in the man’s vehicle. The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment. He is charged with aggravated assault.
Police plan to file more charges for handgun violations and reckless endangerment, Moses said.
