Baltimore police arrested a 16-year-old boy they suspect in some of the two dozen burglaries and attempted burglaries that have struck Canton over the past month.
Police said detectives are "looking at him" in connection to multiple burglaries, spokeswoman Det. Angela Carter-Watson said. No more details were immediately available and police are not releasing the boy's name because of his age.
Over the past 30 days, burglaries and attempted burglaries have jumped significantly in the Canton community, police acknowledged at a community meeting on Monday.
Maj. William Davis, commander of the Southeastern District, called the rise in break-ins "a very big spike for Canton," which typically reports very few burglaries. Most of the incidents have occurred on blocks north of O'Donnell Square.
Police have said they suspected one teenager was responsible for the crimes, which have traumatized some residents. One person reported being asleep on the couch when a burglar broke in and stole her phone. Later, Davis said, the suspect posted a picture of himself holding a gun on the victim's Facebook page. Another resident reported having her checkbooks and jewelry stolen while her family was on vacation. It was the second time burglars had targeted her home in two weeks.
About 100 people attended Monday's community meeting about the burglaries.
