Closing arguments set for Tuesday in attempted murder trial of Baltimore officer

Michael Johansen, 47, testified for about two hours in Baltimore Circuit Court, describing how he went to burglarize a corner store in the 3000 block of E. Monument Street on a winter morning in 2014 and ended up being shot multiple times by officers. (Alison Knezevich/The Baltimore Sun)

Lawyers are scheduled to deliver closing arguments Tuesday in the trial of a Baltimore police officer charged in the shooting of an unarmed man.

Officer Wesley Cagle, 46, is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and a handgun violation in connection with the December 2014 shooting of Michael Johansen in East Baltimore.

Johansen, who was a suspect in a corner store burglary, had already been shot by two other officers when Cagle approached him, according to testimony in the case.

Jurors have heard testimony over five days.

Cagle's defense attorneys have argued that the officer believed Johansen could have been armed, and that he acted reasonably in the situation. Prosecutors say it was unnecessary for Cagle to fire his gun.
