Batts: 'I've been proud to be a police officer for this city.'

Former Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts, whose contract was terminated Wednesday, released a short statement in the evening.

"I've been honored to serve the citizens and residents of Baltimore," Batts told the Sun. "I've been proud to be a police officer for this city."

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake hired Batts, who also served as a police chief in Oakland and Long Beach, Calif., in August 2012. Batts replaced Frederick H. Bealefeld III, who had retired.
