A Baltimore man was sentenced to five years in prison for committing arson during the unrest that followed Freddie Gray's death, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
Darius Stewart, 22, will serve five years in prison, then three years of supervised release, on the charge of malicious destruction of property by fire, according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Stewart will also have to pay more than $378 thousand in restitution for the store that he set on fire, the statement read.
"Surveillance cameras recorded Darius Stewart setting fire to a store with people inside," U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein said.
"When the evidence proves that criminals destroyed property and jeopardized lives, they must be held accountable."
The charges date back to April 27, 2015, when surveillance footage shows Stewart lighting three separate fires in a liquor store on North Avenue in West Baltimore that had been looted.
Two people were injured in the fire, one seriously, the statement read.
Stewart is the fifth person to be charged with arson in connection to the unrest on April 27.
