Baltimore Police: 2017 homicide total is now 342

A man who died last year from injuries sustained in 2008 has become the 342nd homicide victim for 2017, according to Baltimore police.

Troy Matthew Johnson Jr., of the 1600 block of W. Franklin St., was shot in the back several times in the early morning hours of April 22, 2008, in Baltimore’s Brooklyn neighborhood. His injuries left him in critical condition; however, he survived until Dec. 15, 2017.

On Friday, Baltimore police were notified following an autopsy that Johnson’s death had been ruled a homicide due to his injuries from the 2008 shooting, bringing 2017’s homicide total to 342.

Last year’s homicide total — the worst in the city’s history on a per capita basis — was previously revised in February, when a December double-fatal shooting was reclassified as a justified act. That reduced the city’s 2017 homicide count from 343 to 341.
