Franklin Square fatal shooting marks city's 200th homicide

A woman died after she was found suffering from a gunshot wound Thursday morning in Franklin Square, Baltimore police said. The death is the 200th homicide in the city this year.

The victim was found on a sidewalk in the 1500 block of W. Baltimore St. at around 2:41 a.m., according to police. She was taken to a nearby hospital where medical staff pronounced her dead at 3:19 a.m.

Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.

It has been two years since Baltimore recorded less than 200 homicides in a year, a feat that had previously not been achieved in decades. Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts recently expressed disappointment over the homicide count, though he stressed that the numbers of all other major crimes have gone down.
