Eisenhauer did not tell investigators where Lovell's body was, Blacksburg police chief Anthony Wilson said at a press conference. He declined to provide much detail on how she was located, but said authorities received numerous tips.

"This was a huge investigation from the onset," he said.

Investigators are trying to figure out how the pair met, Wilson said.

Virginia Tech officials said Eisenhauer is a freshman engineering student at the university. The school said hundreds of its students have been involved in the search for the missing teen, including researchers using drones.

"The entire Virginia Tech community extends its support to Nicole's family and friends," the school said in a statement.

Family members of Eisenhauer could not be reached Saturday.

Eisenhauer established himself as one of Howard County's top runners with Wilde Lake in 2014 and 2015. He was named the Howard County indoor track Athlete of the Year in 2015 and was a two-time Class 3A state runner-up in cross country.

Eisenhauer ran cross country at Virginia Tech, according to the school's sports site. His profile was removed after the charges were announced.
