A 22-year-old woman was killed Monday night and her infant child sustained minor injuries after a suspect being pursued by city police plowed into her vehicle in West Baltimore, according to police and a source briefed on the case.
A patrol officer from the Southwest District was pursuing the suspect, driving a Cadillac Seville, on Poplar Grove Street at about 11:30 p.m. when the suspect drove through a red light at North Avenue and crashed into a vehicle being driven by Jordasha Rollins.
The impact caused her vehicle to enter the westbound lanes, where it was struck by another vehicle, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. She died as a result of her injuries.
The man driving the Cadillac bailed out and attempted to flee, but was apprehended, Guglielmi said. He identified the suspect as Charles Jeffries, but did not have additional details.
The department has a "no-chase" policy except in "exigent circumstances." According to Guglielmi, the driver of the Seville was seen driving at a high rate of speed around the 1700 block of Hilton Parkway, and an officer attempted to pull him over. He refused to stop, and Guglielmi said the officer "lost sight of the vehicle."
