City police were investigating two non-fatal shootings Wednesday night, near the Station North arts district and in the Mayfield community of Northeast Baltimore.
The Station North shooting occurred around the corner from the Single Carrott Theatre, which for the past few years has hosted a dramatic reading of the names of city homicide victims from the previous year. The event was held last night but this time at a different location, the University of Maryland School of Law.
Police said a 25-year-old man was walking from North Avenue in the 1900 block of Maryland Ave. at about 7 p.m. when an unknown gunman wearing a ski mask shot him in the leg. Police found the victim in the 2000 block of Maryland Ave., and an alert from the Maryland Institute College of Art indicated the victim was last seen running east on North Avenue.
Police didn't give a motive and don't have a suspect, but claimed the shooting wasn't random.
At 5:50 p.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 2400 block of Pelham Court. There's less information available for this one - police said they found a 24-year-old man in the rear of the block, suffering from a gunshot wound to the "face area." He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No motive, no suspect.
There have been nine homicides this year, compared with 13 at this time last year. There have been 25 non-fatal shootings, compared with 22 at this time last year, police said.
An earlier version misstated the time of the Station North shooting, based on information from Baltimore Police.
